ISOC Urban Planning Thesaurus

"The purpose of a thesaurus is to gather the terminology used in a discipline or a portion of it. It is at this moment when we should mention the complexity involved in the development of a thesaurus of Urbanism, given the nature of this discipline. As a multidisciplinary science forms its theoretical corpus from the disciplines that begin to study the urban and territorial problems from their different perspectives.The result is a series of knowledge of very diverse nature united by the common denominator of the city and the territory. Interdisciplinarity is evident in the selection of the 15 thematic areas around which articulates the totality of the terms of this thesaurus.

This Urbanization Thesaurus was created to be used in the URBISOC Database, a database developed in CINDOC, specialized in Urban Planning and Territorial Planning. But it is also born with the desire to become the instrument of control of vocabulary of other bases specialized in identical subjects that do not have a thesaurus of their own and do not have the necessary means to elaborate it. Their dissemination and use in these other information systems will prove their usefulness. "

"El objetivo de un tesauro es reunir la terminología utilizada en una disciplina o en una parcela de la misma. Es en este momento cuando debemos mencionar la complejidad que entraña la elaboración de un tesauro de Urbanismo, dada la naturaleza de esta disciplina. El Urbanismo como ciencia multidisciplinar forma su corpus teórico a partir de las disciplinas que comienzan a estudiar los problemas urbanos y territoriales desde sus diferentes perspectivas. El resultado es una serie de conocimientos de muy diversa naturaleza unidos por el denominador común de la ciudad y el territorio. Esta interdisciplinariedad se hace patente en la selección de las 15 áreas temáticas alrededor de las cuales se articula la totalidad de los términos de este tesauro. 4422 términos.

Este Tesauro de Urbanismo se creó para ser utilizado en la Base de Datos URBISOC, Base elaborada en el CINDOC, especializada en Urbanismo y Ordenación del Territorio. Pero también nace con el deseo de convertirse en el instrumento de control de vocabulario de aquéllas otras bases especializadas en idénticos temas que no tienen un tesauro propio y no cuentan con los medios necesarios para elaborarlo. Su difusión y utilización en estos otros sistemas de información evidenciará su utilidad."
