KAKEN category definitions are based on a program from Japan called the Kakenhi Program (Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research). Kakenhi provides competitive funds for the development of scientific research, from basic to applied research in all fields ranging across the humanities, the social sciences, and the natural sciences. These grants provide financial support for creative and pioneering research projects that will become the foundation of social development. Projects are selected using a peer-review screening process.
