Village Faith in Korea: Jeju Special Self-Governing Province (Polk regulation of villages in Korea - Jeju-do)

Starting in 2022, the National Folk Museum of Korea has divided the whole country into six regions, including Seoul, Gyeonggi, Incheon, Gyeongsang, Jeolla, Chungcheong, Gangwon, and Jeju, and is conducting a survey on village beliefs by region. Due to various factors such as industrialization, urbanization, and migration, village beliefs are rapidly disappearing, and the scale is reduced and the form is changed briefly in local village communities, including large cities, but village beliefs are still being handed down. This is because there are still people who try to protect village beliefs. From this point of view, it was necessary to observe and record how village beliefs are maintained and how they are changing.

In 2023, a survey of village beliefs was conducted in the Jeolla and Jeju areas. As a result, a report on village beliefs (total of 3 volumes) in ⌈ Korea was published following the Chungcheong area in 2022. This report is composed of three volumes: Gwangju Metropolitan City and Jeollanam-do, Jeollabuk-do, and Jeju Special Self-Governing Province. In Gwangju Metropolitan City and Jeollanam-do, a total of 49 regions, including 7 Gwangju Metropolitan City and 42 Jeollanam-do, were included. And in Jeollabuk-do, 35 regions of village beliefs were included. In addition, 40 regions of Jeju Special Self-Governing Province included village beliefs. Meanwhile, each report included a list of whether or not it was transmitted for comparison with the 2007 survey on the current status of village beliefs.

2022년부터 국립민속박물관은 서울•경기•인천권, 경상권, 전라권, 충청권, 강원권, 제주권 등 전국을 여섯 개의 권역으로 나누고, 권역별 마을신앙 조사를 시행하고 있다. 산업화, 도시화, 이주 등의 다양한 요인으로 인해 마을신앙은 빠르게 사라지고, 대도시를 비롯한 지역의 마을 공동체에서는 그 규모는 축소되고, 형식은 간략하게 바뀌어 가지만, 여전히 마을신앙이 전해오고 있다. 이는 마을신앙을 지키기 위해 노력하는 사람들이 여전히 존재하고 있기 때문이다. 이러한 관점에서 마을신앙이 어떻게 유지되고 있는지, 어떻게 변화되고 있는지 등에 관해 관찰하고, 기록할 필요가 있었다.

2023년에는 전라권과 제주권을 대상으로 마을신앙 조사를 시행하였다. 그 결과 2022년 충청권에 이어 ⌈한국의 마을신앙(전라•제주권) 조사보고서 (총3권).⌋를 발간하게 되었다. 본 보고서는 광주광역시•전라남도 1권, 전라북도 1권, 제주특별자치도 1권으로 총 3권으로 구성되었다. 광주광역시•전라남도에서는 광주광역시 7곳, 전라남도 42곳 등 총 49개 지역이 수록되었다. 그리고 전라북도에서는 35개 지역의 마을신앙이 수록되었다. 또 제주특별자치도에서는 40개 지역의 마을신앙이 수록되었다. 한편, 각 보고서에는 2007년 마을신앙 현황조사와 비교할 수 있도록 전승 여부를 목록을 수록하였다.
