The completion of a standardized and unified list of insects living in Korea (scientific and national names) is an indispensable element of systematic national insect resource management. However, insect names are determined by the results of research in insect taxonomy, and there are also insect names that have not been clearly defined in accordance with ongoing research on insects, along with international conventions based on the Latin scientific method of selection. The names of insects known so far are also incorrectly recorded due to differences in interpretation, causing some problems.

종(種)의 학명 정리와 목록화는 곤충분류학의 가장 기초적인 과정이라고 할 수 있습니다.

우리나라에 서식하는 곤충에 대한 표준화되고 통일된 곤충목록(학명 및 국명)의 완성은 체계적인 국가곤충자원관리의 필수 불가결한 요소입니다. 그러나 곤충이름은 곤충분류학의 연구 성과에 의해 정해지며, 라틴어의 학명의 선택방식에 따른 국제적인 규약과 함께 계속되는 곤충의 연구에 따라 그 명칭이 확실히 정해지지 않은 곤충명도 존재합니다. 지금까지 알려진 곤충의 이름도 해석상의 차이에 의해 잘못 기록되어 일부에서는 문제를 야기하기도 합니다.

국가표준곤충목록은 이런 혼란스럽게 통용되거나 잘못 표기된 곤충의 이름을 표준화, 오류의 최소화하고, 우리나라에 서식하는 곤충 종을 정리한 목록입니다.

이렇게 작성된 국가표준곤충목록은 지속적으로 곤충명에 대한 최근의 자료를 반영하여 관리되며, 중앙 데이터베이스(database)화 작업을 통해 인터넷상에서 첨부파일의 형태로 다운받을 수 있도록 제공하게 됩니다. 이로서, 정부부처 및 관련 연구기관, 교육기관 등 일반 곤충관련 전 분야에 걸쳐 작성된 곤충목록을 사용할 수 있게 됩니다
