Encyclopedia of Korean Seasonal Customs:Supplement

Encyclopedia of Korean Seasonal Customs: Supplement is a part of the Encyclopedia of Korean Seasonal Customs in the Encyclopedia of Korean Folk Culture. It is composed of two sections: the index and the white paper. The Encyclopedia of Korean Seasonal Customs has been published in four volumes, divided according to the characteristics of seasonal customs that follow the cycle of the four seasons: spring, summer, autumn, and winter. However, since the first month of the lunar calendar, Jeongwol (the lunar January), is the period with the most seasonal customs, it has been published as a separate volume. This encyclopedia is mainly divided into lunar and solar calendars. The lunar section includes major events like Seollal (Lunar New Year) and Daeboreum (the first full moon), as well as seasonal terms such as Ipchun (beginning of spring) and Usu (rainwater), along with monthly customs and livelihoods.

The encyclopedia can be browsed in the same way as a typical dictionary by looking up headwords, or it can be read as a cohesive work with an organic structure, like a monograph. Therefore, it is efficient for both finding specific pieces of information and studying the overall seasonal customs of Jeongwol. Starting with the Jeongwol volume, the encyclopedia was published in the following order: Spring, Autumn, Winter, Appendices, and the Index volume.

한국세시풍속사전:색인편(Encyclopedia of Korean Seasonal Customs:Supplemen)은 한국민속대백과사전의 '한국세시풍속사전' 중 한 부분으로, 색인집과 백서 2개의 장으로 구성되어있다. 한국세시풍속사전은 사계절이 순환하는 세시풍속의 특성에 따라 봄·여름·가을·겨울로 구분되어 발간되었다. 그러나 음력 1월인 정월의 경우에는 세시풍속 가운데 가장 많은 풍속이 이루어지는 시기이므로 분권을 하였다. 이 사전은 크게 음력과 양력으로 구분되어있고, 음력은 설이나 대보름과 같은 정일, 입춘이나 우수와 같은 절기, 그리도 월내와 생업 등으로 구분하였다. 일반적인 사전처럼 표제어를 찾아가며 열람할 수도 있고, 단행본처럼 전체 체제가 유기적인 구성으로 되어 있다. 따라서 단편적인 내용을 찾는 것에서부터 정월 세시풍속의 전반을 연구하는데 있어서도 효율적이라고 할 수 있다. 『한국세시풍속사전』 정월편을 첫머리로 해서 봄편, 가을편, 겨울편, 부록 및 색인편이 출간되었다.
