Encyclopedia of Korean Seasonal Customs:Season

The Encyclopedia of Korean Seasonal Customs: Season is one part of the "Encyclopedia of Korean Seasonal Customs" within the Encyclopedia of Korean Folk Culture. The Encyclopedia of Korean Seasonal Customs was published in volumes divided into spring, summer, autumn, and winter, in accordance with the cyclical nature of seasonal customs across the four seasons. However, the first lunar month (jeongwol), corresponding to January in the lunar calendar, was published as a separate volume given that it is the period in which the greatest number of seasonal customs are observed. The encyclopedia is broadly divided into the lunar and solar calendars; within the lunar calendar, entries are categorized into fixed festival days such as Seol (Lunar New Year) and Daeboreum (the first full moon), seasonal divisions (jeolgi) such as Ipchun (Start of Spring) and Usu (Rain Water), as well as monthly observances and livelihood-related customs. It can be used like a conventional dictionary by looking up individual headwords, while the overall structure is also organically composed like a monograph. It is therefore effective both for looking up specific pieces of information and for researching the full scope of seasonal customs. Following the January volume as its inaugural publication, the spring, autumn, winter, and appendix and index volumes were subsequently published.
