Classification of Activities for Time Use Survey

The Classification of Activities for Time Use Survey (CATUS) categorizes activities according to the purpose of the respondent's behavior into 9 major categories, 42 intermediate categories, and 138 minor categories. Activity classification codes consist of three digits, where the first digit represents the major category, the second digit the intermediate category, and the third digit the minor category. Korea's activity classification codes have been structured to reflect the realities of Korean society based on international standards; while international standards have not been directly applied, the classification has been independently developed and implemented by Statistics Korea. The international standard reference is the UN's International Classification of Activities for Time Use Statistics (ICATUS, 2012); however, as each country conducting time use surveys is encouraged to build its own classification system suited to its national characteristics, Korea likewise employs its own independent classification framework.

생활시간조사행동분류(Classification of Activities for Time Use Survey, CATUS)는 응답자가 행동한 목적에 따라 행동을 9개 대분류, 42개 중분류, 138개 소분류로 분류하며 행동분류부호는 세자리로 구성되며, 첫째자리는 대분류, 둘째자리는 중분류, 셋째자리는 소분류를 나타낸다. 한국의 행동분류부호는 국제기준에 근거하여 한국사회 실정에 맞게 행동분류체계를 구축하였으며 국제기준을 적용하지는 않았으나, 통계청에서 자체적으로 구축하여 적용하고 있다. 국제기준은 UN의 행동분류(2012)가 있으나, 생활시간조사를 실시하는 나라마다 국가의 특징에 맞게 분류를 구축하여 조사하고 있으며,이를 권장하고 있어, 우리나라도 이에 따라서 자체분류체계를 사용하고 있다.
