- 특허 출원 및 분쟁 등 증가로 국제적인 가치가 높아지고 있는 지식재산서비스산업 분야의 통계기반을 구축하고, 관련 산업에 대한 체계적인 육성정책 수립을 지원하기 위한 분류체계 기본 틀을 제공

- 지식재산기본법 및 발명진흥법에서 정하는 지식재산서비스산업을 근거로 작성

- 지식재산 창출, 보호, 활용 및 유통, 제공 등 지식재산서비스 활동과 관련된 지식재산 법률 대리업, 지식재산 평가·임대 및 중개업, 지식재산 유통업, 지식재산 정보서비스업, 지식재산 컨설팅·교육 및 홍보업 등의 산업활동을 포함
