Totem poles are monuments created by First Nations of the Pacific Northwest to represent and commemorate ancestry, histories, people, or events, and would be erected to be visible within a community.<br />
The TOTEM registry is used, analogously, to record the complex hardware and software relationships which apply to digital objects, and to make them visible to the digital preservation community.<br />
