Innerhalb dieser waren die Titel alphabetisch eingeordnet. Er umfasst insgesamt 1.200 Bändchen mit ca. 586.000 Titeln. Den seltsam anmutenden Namen erhielt der Katalog nach der ursprünglichen Form, wobei die Titelnachweise auf Papierstreifen zwischen Pappe durch ein starkes Gurtband (deswegen 'Strumpfband') zusammengehalten wurden."
